A screen that works well for one student can be genuinely hard for another. Animations, streak counters, notification dots, and leaderboards are meant to motivate — but for a student who finds it difficult to hold attention, or who is easily overwhelmed, they compete for the very focus the student is trying to give the work. Focus & Calm mode is a single switch that turns the interface into a quieter place to think.
One thing at a time
With the mode on, the app does less on screen. Motion and animation are reduced, decorative elements step back, and the student is shown the next task rather than a wall of everything at once. A clear "Next up" points to the single thing worth doing now, so starting is a decision about one task instead of a whole list.
Removing the pressure that does not help
Some motivators quietly become stressors. In this mode, leaderboards can be hidden entirely, streaks stop feeling like something to lose, and progress is shown as steady effort rather than a score to defend. Work can be saved as a draft and returned to later without penalty, so a student who needs to stop and come back does not start from zero.
A choice the student — or their guardian — can make
Any student can turn Focus & Calm mode on for themselves; it is theirs to control, not a label applied to them. Where a guardian or teacher is involved, individual aspects of it can be set on a student's behalf, so support at school and support at home can line up. Nothing about it is announced to the class — it simply makes the app calmer for whoever needs it.
Accessibility is often treated as ramps and contrast ratios. It is also about attention, working memory, and how much a screen asks of a person before they can begin. Focus & Calm mode is our first substantial step toward taking that seriously.
